Tahlequah has been the historic capital of the Cherokee Nation since 1841.  Northeastern State University, founded in 1846 as the Cherokee National Female Seminary, is the oldest institution of higher learning in Oklahoma. Progressive civic and tribal leaders and industrial entrepreneurs create a bright future for this charming community, named one of the Top 100 Best Small Towns in America.
